A chain-reaction collision on Saturday morning killed a deer and sent a cyclist to hospital.

It began just after 10 a.m. when a vehicle that was southbound in the 5800-block of Wallace Drive hit the deer, which Saanich police determined had jumped out of a ditch into the vehicle’s path.

The impact of the collision sent the deer flying into a passing cyclist, who was heading north on Wallace, near Willis Point Road.

The animal was critically injured and euthanized at the scene, Saanich police said.

The cyclist was taken to hospital by paramedics with significant leg injuries.
