Nov. 2, 1956: School board ready to swap old castle

Craigdarroch Castle is no longer suited to school board purposes and the board would welcome a swap with the city for a new building, board chairman W. H. Golby said today.

City finance committee Thursday authorized Ald. Austin Curtis and city manager C.C. Wyatt to investigate taking over the old castle on Joan Crescent as a revenue-producing tourist attraction. It was suggested the castle would earn enough to pay for a new school board administration building.

"We are vitally interested," said Mr. Golby. "We have been discussing the matter with Capital Improvement District Commission in general terms. We feel the castle would be of great value to the city, and have been definitely planning to provide additional space."
