Peter Jones swept the North Saanich mayoral race, receiving 58.7 per cent of the vote to defeat challengers Nancy Borden and Murray Weisenberger.

Incumbent councillors Hazel Braithwaite, Cairine Green, Andrew Appleton and Esther Paterson were elected alongside newcomers Carrie Smart and Lesley Watson.

The former three-term councillor won a narrow victory over incumbent Fred Haynes.

Cliff McNeil-Smith was acclaimed as mayor of Sidney for a second term. Incumbent councillors Terri O’Keefe, Sara Duncan, Chad Rintoul and Scott Garnett were elected along with new arrivals Steve Duck and Richard Novek.

Maja Tait is returning for another term as mayor of Sooke, easily turning back challengers Mick Rhodes and John Knops with 72 per cent of the vote.

Marianne Alto captured 55 per cent of the vote, while her closest rival among the eight mayoral candidates, Stephen Andrew, was second with 36 per cent.

Former navy officer Sid Tobias defeated incumbent David Screech, who was first elected to council in 2002 and became mayor in 2014.
