Construction officially started Wednesday on the planned 129-room TownePlace Suites Victoria Airport at the corner of the Patricia Bay Highway and Beacon Avenue West.
“The Island’s business and tourism sectors have long recognized that there is a vital need for more hotel rooms in the region,” said Elizabeth Brown, airport chief executive.
“Having TownePlace Suites at Victoria International Airport is a welcome addition to the overall inventory of accommodations available and will provide travellers and visitors to the region with convenient access not only to the airport but to the many attractions, services and amenities found in the Greater Victoria area.”
The hotel will be part of the Marriott hospitality organization. It is being developed by Kothari Group, of Missisauaga, Ont., and is scheduled to open by the end of next year.
The new hotel is designed to attract business travellers, tourists and locals.
Construction plans include environmentally friendly initiatives such as energy-efficient systems, water conservation and waste reduction programs.
Amenities include extended-stay rooms each with a kitchenette, work desk and seating area. The hotel will feature a heated salt-water swimming pool.
