In the past year, Bill Porteous spent weeks painting giant panels along a 152-metre long hoarding that wraps around the Atrium construction site at Blanshard, Yates and Johnson streets. He was energized and excited by the giant commission, but in the last several months decided to return to a more subdued-size canvas.
About 30 of these new works will be on display at his Studio Gallery, 2960A Jutland Rd., from 7 to
10 p.m. tomorrow. The show continues every weekend till Dec. 20, from noon to 6 p.m.
The upbeat, abstract works, created mostly on paper with squeegees, are like jazz improvisations as one painting evolves from another.
"I decided it was time to draw on my own experience of painting and let it all out," said the artist.
SMALL ART, TINY PRICE AT AGGV
Small is definitely beautiful -- and it comes at a tiny price too, if you shop at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria these days.
From now until the New Year, the gallery is presenting its annual holiday treat, the Small Works Show and Sale. All the art is original, created by local artists, framed and tagged at $100. The pieces make colourful and original gifts. The gallery is at 1040 Moss St.
DANCE FILMS GO ONLINE
High quality local and international dance films can now be seen online thanks to a creative new project by Victoria's
MediaNet. Its new Dance for the Camera video channel, danceforthecamera.org, features seven full-screen films, possibly with more to come, said executive director Peter Sandmark.
The showcase was aided by a small ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Arts Council grant which provided money for technical support and allows Med-iaNet to pay the artists. (More sponsors are needed to put more videos on screen. Call 250-381-4428 to help.)
MediaNet offers training and video equipment at low rates for members to explore their own creativity.
OPEN HOUSE ON AT SCHOOL OF ART
Ever seen an art student's studio?
Vancouver Island School of Art's open house runs from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday and on display will be a room devoted to independent study programs. Here, students who are on their way to becoming independent artists have left their work stations intact -- with works in progress.
A vast array of paintings, drawings, prints, photography and sculpture will also be on display at the school's Slide Room Gallery, in a show called Horizontal Line. Also included are original art cards for sale and refreshments.
Faculty members will be on hand to answer questions about courses.
They are at 2549 Quadra St.
