GreekFest a two-week celebration of food and culture
Everything from Greek salad and gyros to spanakopita and souvlaki will satiate appetites over two weekends at the 24th annual GreekFest,a hugely popular community event.
Thousands take in the food and cultural offerings on tap each year — so many people, in fact, organizers now spread the seven-day event over two full weekends at the Greek Orthodox Church and Community Centre (4648 Elk Lake Dr.) located near Saanich Commonwealth Place. The first instalment of GreekFest runs Friday to Sunday, Aug. 23-25, while the second spans Aug. 30-Sept. 2.
Food isn’t the only attraction, however. Live performances from more than 20 dance and music groups are scheduled, including performances by groups from Victoria and Vancouver. Elkelam, from Athens, Greece, is travelling to ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ specifically to perform at the event.
Operating hours are 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. both weekends. Admission is free.

City of Gardens quilt show and sale
The City of Gardens Quilt Show and Sale is on tap this weekend at G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre, located behind Tillicum Centre.
The annual showcase for members of the Victoria Quilters’ Guild features upwards of 250 quilts, which range from traditional hand- and machine-made quilts to textile art. The biennial sale is one of the guild’s top events, and is expected draw hundreds of people to the venue through its three-day run.
The City of Gardens Quilt Show and Sale is open Friday and Saturday, Aug. 24 and Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Three-day admission is $10. For more on the show, go to .
By-donation car show to raise money for ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Children’s Hospital
The fourth edition of the Canamera Cruise-In takes place Sunday in Saanichton. The classic car show will be held at 2205 Keating Cross Rd. and will feature about 300 vintage vehicles, from Porsches to Chevrolets.
The Canamera Cruise-In also includes a silent auction and live music from local favourites Backbeat. The entire event, including food and drinks, is offered on a by-donation basis. Proceeds from the show benefit ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Children’s Hospital. The event runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
