Sooke’s traffic congestion problem got some relief this week with the opening of Charters Road to two-way vehicle and bicycle traffic.

The District of Sooke announced the work is now substantially complete, though finishing touches will continue until the end of the year.

The road, which was closed from Golledge Avenue to Throup Road in May as it was upgraded along with a new culvert, repairs to the deteriorating street surface and improved storm-water system, now boasts a new surface, new water main, storm drain, sidewalks, buffered bike lanes, streetlighting, and a new parking area.

“Delivering this project on time and within budget is an important milestone for our community,” said Mayor Maja Tait. “Charters Road is now a safer, more accessible route, and we’re excited to reopen it for everyone to enjoy. This project reflects our commitment to improving infrastructure while being mindful of our budget and community needs.”

Temporary measures will be in place on the sidewalks until the installation of permanent safety railings and lighting later this year.

The project, funded by $1.3 million from the province, $1.2 million in development cost charges from a ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Housing project nearby and district reserves, has added to chronic congestion in the area. But the district maintains the road was in poor condition and the fixes had to be made within a certain window of time to protect fish in nearby Charters Creek.

Re-opening the road, which crosses Highway 14 near the SEAPARC Recreation Centre, will not eliminate Sooke’s traffic problems, but it should alleviate congestion on Highway 14 by providing drivers with an opportunity to turn off Highway 14 before reaching the traffic light at Church Road.
