Comox Valley RCMP are reminding parents and other caregivers to teach children how to safely respond to strangers after an incident at Courtenay Elementary School on Tuesday.

Mounties received a report at 1:10 p.m. that a man had been seen on school property attempting to engage in conversation with young students.

A teacher approached the man, prompting him to leave the area, according to police.

Police released a photo of the man that was taken as he was walking away, saying they’d like to speak with him and gather more information, said police spokesperson Const. Monika Terragni.

Police offered this advice for parents and other caregivers to pass on to children:

• If approached by someone they don’t know, children should not engage in conversation.

• Encourage them to always stay in well-supervised areas, especially near schools.

• Remind them that it’s OK to say “no” and walk away, seeking help from a trusted adult if needed.

Anyone who recognizes the person in the image provided by police or who has any information that could help in the investigation is asked to contact Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 and refer to file 2024-17022.

Those who wish to remain anonymous can contact Comox Valley Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
