An outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared on the fifth floor of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
As of Thursday, a total of 10 hospital-acquired cases had been attributed to the outbreak. All patients are experiencing mild illness, an Island Health official said.
The outbreak on the general medicine floor was declared on Wednesday, and no other areas of the hospital are affected, he said.
Health officials emphasized that the Nanaimo hospital remains a safe place and urged people not to avoid seeking emergency care or attending appointments.
Anyone arriving at the Dufferin Crescent facility is required to wear a mask.
The hospital is deploying more staff and additional cleaning on the fifth floor to prevent infections, and there are signs warning of the outbreak at the entrance to the unit, Island Health said.
