Victoria Shamrocks may have lost the Mann Cup Dominion lacrosse championship in Peterborough Friday night, but at least they won something that future western champions will thank them for.
They fought for and gained legislation that has wiped out any chance of future Mann Cup series being played on a dirt floor such as Miller Bowl, where all but last night's game of this five-game series was contested.
It was unfortunate that the Irish were the guinea pigs in the Canadian Lacrosse Association experiment, but henceforth it appears likely that western teams will be treated with more consideration.
The Rocks, in losing, 10-3, at Peterborough Civic Arena, may also have lost the services of three members of this year's club. Norm Baker, who did not make the trip east, previously announced his retirement, as did veteran Arnold Ferguson.
Then, on Friday night, Arch Browning, a standout for the Irish in the series, reiterated a previous statement that he "had enough lacrosse" and would "pack it up." The Shamrocks, defeated four games to one in the series, are in Toronto today, awaiting transportation home.
