Two people were rescued after a pickup broke through a railing and plunged into the water at the Denman Island West ferry terminal Friday morning.
At about 6:40 a.m., the truck travelled down the hill leading to the terminal, hit a railing between two berths and dropped into the ocean.
ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Ferries spokesperson Sheila Reynolds said the truck was not in the loading lanes. “It went through a shore railing, not on the ramp that was loading onto the ferry.”
She said crew members responded immediately, throwing life rings into the water and bringing the two vehicle occupants to shore.
Ambulance paramedics arrived to assess the two people, and provided emergency treatment to one, who was then transported to hospital.
No details on the person’s condition were available.
“Thankfully no staff or crew members were injured, and there was no damage to the vessel or to the operational ramp area,” Reynolds said.
Comox Valley RCMP Const. Monika Terragni said investigators are reviewing evidence from the incident, and impaired driving is being considered as a possible factor.
Ferry service appeared to be back on track later Friday afternoon after earlier delays.
