Montgomery earns NCAA honour

Victoria Highlanders defender Callum Montgomery capped his university career off in style this week, being named an NCAA Academic All-American after a stand-out season at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

Montgomery is the ninth UNC-Charlotte player to earn All-American honours in the program’s history.

This past season, Montgomery, who recently was named first-team United Soccer Coaches Association All-Southeast Region, earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year honours. He earned first-team All-Conference USA honours as well as being named to the Conference USA All-Tournament team. Montgomery is also a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which is awarded to the top player in collegiate soccer.

This season, Montgomery anchored a 49ers defence that recorded thirteen shutouts including 10 at Transamerica Field. He played an integral role in helping the 49ers defence record over 1,000 minutes of play at Transamerica Field without conceding a goal. The senior defender was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week two times this season.
