Cooper Humphreys had a three-shot lead going into the final round of the 2023 ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Men’s Amateur Golf Championship, and he refused to loosen his grip on the trophy.
Humphreys, who hails from Vernon, recorded his third straight round in the 60s on Friday at Morningstar Golf Club in Parksville, to finish with a 4-under 68 and a six-shot win over a pair of Delta golfers in Jace Minnie and John Morrow.
Humphreys, who’s a member of ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½’s national junior team and headed to the NCAA with Oregon State, had five birdies and just one bogey on his card Friday as he punched his ticket to the 2023 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship next month at The Pulpit Club in Caledon, Ont.
Minnie, who along with Morrow plays out of Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, shot the low round of the day with a 66 to claim second place and a spot on the ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Willingdon Cup team that’ll compete at the Canadian Amateur. Morrow got the other Willingdon Cup spot, shooting a 72 Friday to finish alone in third place.
Brock Holland of Victoria had his best round of the tournament Friday with a 70 to finish in a tie for sixth with Gavyn Knight of Lantzville.
The South Island trio of Holland, Kevin Carrigan and Alex Cartwright won the 36-hole zone competition for the tournament.
Next year’s ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Men’s Amateur is slated for Ledgview Golf Club in Abbotsford.
