Victoria rink stays in the hunt

Montgomery knocks off Miki, Griffith

The Jason Montgomery team remained in the hunt for a playoff spot yesterday at the ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Men's Canadian Direct Insurance Championships in Maple Ridge. On the third day of round-robin play, Montgomery, with third Miles Craig, second Gregg Danderfer, and lead Will Duggan, won both of their games to move to a record of three wins and three losses.

Kelowna's Rick Folk, Sean Geall of Royal City, and Dennis Graber of Kamloops lead the pack at 4-2, while Montgomery is locked in a five-way tie for fourth place.

The team began the day at the Golden Ears Winter Club by edging Royal City's Bryan Miki 9-8 in an extra end. Montgomery scored a big three points in the ninth end to take an 8-6 lead. Miki tied it up in the 10th, but the team from the Victoria Curling Club won it with a single in the 11th.

In the evening draw, a 9-1, six-end victory over two-time ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ junior champion Tyrel Griffith of Vernon, Montgomery stole points in each of the first four ends to jump out to a 6-0 advantage.

The round robin continues through Friday morning, when the top four teams will move into a Page playoff. The semifinal, on Saturday at 8 p.m., and final, Sunday at 4 p.m., are being broadcast on Shaw Cable.
