TORONTO — Globalive is looking to return to the Canadian wireless market with an offer to buy spectrum licenses from former wireless company Xplore Mobile.

Manitoba-based Xplore Mobile, which offered wireless service to customers in the province, shut down in August 2022.

Globalive chairman Anthony Lacavera says he sees Manitoba as a starting point in building a new national independent wireless carrier.

He says Globalive will be participating in the federal government's upcoming spectrum auctions.

Globalive launched Wind Mobile and later sold the company to Shaw Communications Inc., which rebranded the business as Freedom Mobile.

Lacavera and Globalive offered to buy Freedom back when it went up for sale as part of Roger Communications Inc.'s plan to appease competition concerns raised by its deal to buy Shaw, however they lost out to Quebecor Inc.
