The 2022 edition of the ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Christmas Fund is off to a strong start, raising $22,714 in its first four days.
And I have a feeling it will get a healthy boost in the next couple of days as we work toward our optimistic goal of $1 million. The money will be put to work as soon as possible, providing food for the hungry, toys for children, and comfort for all.
Andrew Beckerman, a regular — and generous — contributor to the fund for several years, has come up with the first match challenge. He says he will contribute $5,000 if someone else will do the same.
Beckerman has issued challenges in years past, and all of them have been met. But why does he do it?
He sums up his philosophy in a short sentence: “I live better if everyone lives better.”
Beckerman says he has had good luck in his life, and as a result he has the resources to provide support when it is needed.
“It’s not rocket science, rather merely common sense, and appropriate,” he says.
This is the season to help others. The wonder of Christmas, and the thrill of the entire festive season, is in the joy of giving, rather than getting.
We have endured three tough years, with the COVID pandemic and all of the economic and social upheaval that it has caused. Through it all, we have proven that we are resilient.
We have stayed strong, and for the most part, we are still doing our best to look out for our neighbours.
But we can’t forget that there is pain and misery in our midst. The cost of food and gasoline has shattered some household budgets. It can be difficult to see the joy in the Christmas season when you are not sure where your next meal will come from.
When you donate to the ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Christmas Fund, your money will be put to work throughout Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. We help several food banks, we help fill baskets for the less privileged, and we support other organizations that work to make this a better season for all.
After all, it’s true: We will live better if everyone else is living better. Wise words from Andrew Beckerman, who is ready to back up his belief with $5,000. It’s just waiting for you to match it.
