Re: "Privacy czar to investigate licence scans," July 31. The privacy investigation into police use of licence-plate scans is unnecessary overkill. Every individual has a public and a private persona.

Re: "Immigrants should pay full costs," July 31. I came to ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ in 1951 as an immigrant. I did not pay one penny for processing my application for a visa. The government of ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ had sent recruiters to Europe to encourage people to apply.

Pit bulls no worse than other breeds

Re: "Pit bull, owner sought after attack on woman and guide dog in park," July 31. Breed discrimination is the same as any other kind of discrimination - and it's not OK. The idea that muzzles should be mandatory for pit bulls makes me cringe.

Nothing wrong with scanning licences

Re: "Privacy czar to investigate licence scans," July 31. Driving a car, though necessary for many of us, is a privilege, not a right. It is earned on competence and kept with good behaviour. If I have done nothing wrong, I need not fear.

Anti-Franco volunteers deserve more recognition

Re: "Untold story in plain view," July 27. It was great to see the story by Cory Ruf on the untold story of the Canadian volunteers who fought against Franco's Spanish fascists in the 1930s.

Contaminated soil a threat to water

Here I sit watching another glorious sunset on Shawnigan Lake, something I have done from birth. I am watching the lake struggle with septic pollution, powerboats and deforestation. This gem is losing its shine.
